Will it fit through the door? — the short answer

Ignore the item’s longest side — that dimension only travels through the opening and never has to fit it. What matters is the cross-section: the two smaller sides. If both of those clear the door’s width and height in some rotation, it slides straight through. If the item is a bit taller than the door, tilting lets it borrow the door’s longer diagonal. If even that fails, you’re into removing the door, unbolting legs, or hoisting it through a window.

The Math / Formulas Used

The longest side d3passes lengthwise through the opening, so it is left out of the fit test entirely. Because a doorway’s diagonal is longer than either edge — a 32 × 80″ door has an ~86″ diagonal — tilting a tall piece so its taller cross-dimension rides that diagonal often clears an item that will not go straight, as long as the narrowest side still slips past the door’s width.

The four verdicts

Tricks when it won’t fit

Small gains add up. Lifting the door off its hinges adds roughly 0.75–1″ of clear width and removes the handle and stop that snag corners. Unbolting sofa legs or feet drops 2–4″of height. Prying off the door-stop trim buys another ~0.5″. Bi-fold and French doors on the route can be lifted out completely. When the tightest clearance is under an inch, one of these usually turns a “won’t fit” into a tilt.
