About the Acacia Wood Cutting Board

One piece of solid acacia rather than a glued-up panel, so it takes a knife without splintering and will not delaminate in a damp kitchen. The paddle handle makes it easy to lift and carry, and the grain is dark enough that it goes from prep board to cheese board without looking like kitchen equipment.

What's inside

  • Solid acacia hardwood, 13.8 x 9.8 x 0.6 inches (35 x 25 x 1.5 cm)
  • Paddle handle with hanging hole
  • Kinder to knife edges than plastic or bamboo
  • Hand wash and oil occasionally — never put wood in a dishwasher

Still deciding? Which Cutting Board Material Is Actually Best?

End-grain or edge-grain hardwood is the best all-round cutting board: research at the University of Wisconsin found bacteria left on wood surfaces died off rather than surviving as they did in the knife grooves of used plastic. Wood is also far kinder to a blade. Use a separate plastic board for raw meat, because plastic is the only material that can go through a dishwasher hot enough to sanitise. Avoid glass, stone and hard composites entirely: they will dull a knife in a handful of uses.

Questions about the Acacia Wood Cutting Board

What size is this cutting board?

13.8 x 9.8 x 0.6 inches (35 x 25 x 1.5 cm), including the paddle handle. That is a comfortable everyday size for vegetables, bread and cheese; a whole chicken wants something larger.

Can this board go in the dishwasher?

No. Prolonged soaking and dishwasher heat split wooden boards, usually irreversibly. Hand wash with hot soapy water, rinse and stand it on edge to dry.

How often should I oil an acacia board?

When it starts to look dry — roughly monthly at first, then a few times a year. Use food-grade mineral oil or a board cream, never olive or vegetable oil, which goes rancid.

Is wood or plastic more sanitary?

Research at Wisconsin found bacteria on wooden boards died off while surviving in the knife grooves of used plastic. Keep a separate plastic board for raw meat, because only plastic can be dishwasher-sanitised.

Is it one piece or glued?

One piece of solid acacia, not a glued-up panel. There are no glue lines to delaminate in a damp kitchen.
