Lint is other people's clothes. Specifically, it is loose fibres shed by one garment during washing or drying that then settle on another — which is why a black jumper washed with towels comes out looking like it has been in a snowstorm, and why the same jumper washed alone does not.
That framing matters, because it means the durable fix is a sorting change rather than a removal technique.
Getting it off now
Four methods, all working on some combination of adhesion, static and friction.
- A lint roller. Fastest and most thorough, and the only one that runs out.
- A slightly damp microfiber cloth, wiped in one direction. Nearly as effective, reusable indefinitely, and already in most kitchens.
- A rubber washing-up glove, dragged across the fabric. The friction generates static that lifts fibres remarkably well. Free.
- Packing tape wound sticky-side-out around your hand. Excellent for a shoulder or a lapel before leaving the house.

Lint and pilling are different problems
This trips a lot of people up. Lint sits on the fabric and comes off. Pills are made of the fabric — small balls of the garment's own fibres, tangled together by friction at cuffs, underarms and the seat of trousers.

A lint roller does nothing to pills. They have to be cut off, which is what a fabric shaver does.

A fresh disposable razor works if you do not own a shaver, with one rule: lay the garment flat on a hard surface and pull the area taut first. Shaving a loose, slack knit is exactly how people put a hole in a jumper.
Stopping it recurring
Sort by shedding behaviour, not only by colour. Towels, fleece, flannel and new denim shed heavily. Corduroy, black cotton, velvet and synthetics attract heavily. Keeping those two groups out of the same load solves most household lint problems permanently.

- Turn lint-attracting clothes inside out. The outside faces the drum, not the load.
- Do not overload. Clothes need room to move for loose fibres to rinse away rather than redeposit.
- Use less detergent. Residue is sticky and holds lint against fabric. Most people use about twice what is needed.
- Add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse. It relaxes fibres and reduces static, which is what makes lint cling.
When it is the machine
If lint appears on everything regardless of how you sort, check the filters. A clogged dryer lint filter recirculates fibres back onto the load, and washing machines have their own filter — usually behind a small panel at the base — that most people have never opened.

The short version
- Lint roller, damp microfiber, or a rubber glove — all work.
- Always wipe in one direction.
- Pills are not lint; they need a fabric shaver or a fresh razor.
- Lay a garment flat and taut before shaving it.
- Sort by shedding: towels and fleece away from black cotton and cord.
- Clean the dryer filter every load — for lint and for fire safety.
Microfiber's cleaning power comes from the same fibre structure that makes it good at this, and how to wash microfiber cloths covers keeping it that way.
