Never use fabric softener on microfiber and never dry it on high heat: softener coats the fibres in a waxy film that fills the spaces doing the cleaning, and heat melts the polyester strands closed. Wash microfiber separately from cotton, because cotton sheds lint that microfiber then traps. Most households want five to ten cloths in rotation so that dirty ones can wait for a full load, colour-coded by area — kitchen, bathroom, glass, dusting — so a cloth used on a toilet never reaches a worktop. A cloth that has stopped picking up dirt is usually clogged rather than finished, and a hot wash with no detergent will often restore it.

Can I use fabric softener on them?
No, and this is the main thing that ruins microfiber. Softener leaves a film that fills the spaces between fibres, so the cloth stops absorbing and stops grabbing dirt while looking perfectly normal. Dryer sheets do the same.
How do I wash them?
Shake them out dry, wash separately from cotton — microfiber traps the lint cotton sheds — with a little liquid detergent, warm rather than hot, no softener and no bleach. Air dry or tumble on the lowest heat.
Do they work without cleaning spray?
Yes, for most kitchen and bathroom surfaces. The split fibres lift and hold dirt rather than pushing it around, which is what a cotton cloth mostly does, so plain water covers a lot.
My cloth has stopped absorbing — is it finished?
Usually not. It is normally clogged with detergent residue, softener or grease. Wash it hot with no detergent, or with white vinegar in place of detergent, and most cloths recover.
