The glass-versus-plastic argument usually gets framed as a safety question, which makes it more heated and less useful than it needs to be. In practice, most of the decision is about how each material behaves after six months in a real kitchen.
Where glass clearly wins
Glass is chemically inert. It does not absorb oil, it does not stain, it does not hold the smell of last week's curry, and it does not change over time. A glass container that is ten years old performs identically to a new one, which is not remotely true of plastic.
It also goes straight from fridge to microwave to oven to table, which collapses several dishes into one and removes a washing-up step.

Where plastic clearly wins
Weight and breakage, and those are not trivial. A glass container of soup in a bag is heavy and one drop ends the day. For a lunchbox, a child's food, a picnic or anything leaving the house, plastic is simply the correct tool.
The freezer is the other case. Liquids expand as they freeze, and glass — particularly with straight sides and a tight lid — can crack. Tempered glass rated for freezer use is fine with enough headspace, but plastic removes the worry entirely.

The safety question, answered plainly
BPA has been removed from food-contact plastics, and containers sold today are BPA-free as a baseline rather than as a feature. The remaining concern is that plastics can release small amounts of their constituents into food, and that this increases with heat and fat.

Staining, warping and smells
This is where plastic ages badly. Tomato, turmeric and curry stain it permanently because the pigments are fat-soluble and plastic is slightly porous. Dishwasher heat warps lids until they no longer seal. And once a container smells of garlic, it usually smells of garlic for the rest of its life.

Sunlight is the underrated fix for staining — a few hours of UV breaks down the pigments and removes most of the colour for free.
The cost argument
Glass looks expensive and is generally the cheaper option over a decade, because plastic sets get replaced. The crossover is around year three.

The set most kitchens should actually own
- Glass, 3-4 medium and 2 large — leftovers, batch cooking, anything reheated.
- Plastic, 4-6 small to medium — lunches, freezer portions, things leaving the house.
- Glass jars, 4 × 1 litre — pantry staples, where an airtight seal matters most.
- One brand per material, so lids interchange. This matters more than it sounds.
Buying a single system per material is the quiet upgrade: mismatched lids are the reason container cupboards become chaotic, and it is solved at purchase rather than by organising.
