Limescale is calcium carbonate, dropped out of solution when hard water is heated. It builds on the element and the base of the kettle, and it does three things: it flakes into your tea, it makes the kettle louder and slower, and it costs you electricity.
That last one is the part people underrate. Scale is a poor conductor of heat — roughly comparable to brick — so a furred element has to run hotter and longer to transfer the same energy into the water. It also shortens the element's life.

The vinegar method

Half fill with equal parts white vinegar and water
Enough to cover the element and the scaled area. Use white vinegar rather than malt — the smell is much easier to rinse out.

Bring it to the boil
Heat accelerates the reaction substantially. It will smell strongly; open a window.

Switch off and leave for an hour
The soak does most of the work, not the boil. Heavy scale can sit overnight without harm.

Pour away and rinse at least three times
Fill, swirl vigorously, empty. Three rinses is a minimum — one leaves enough vinegar to ruin a cup of tea.

Boil a full kettle of clean water and throw it away
The final check. If that water smells at all of vinegar, rinse and repeat.

The citric acid method (no smell)
Citric acid is what most commercial descaling sachets contain, sold as a powder for a fraction of the branded price. It is odourless, food-safe, and slightly faster than vinegar.
- Fill the kettle with water and boil it.
- Add one to two tablespoons of citric acid powder and swirl.
- Leave for twenty minutes.
- Pour away and rinse twice — no third rinse needed, because there is nothing to smell.

How often
Water hardness varies enormously between regions, so a single interval is meaningless. The kettle itself is the best gauge: if you can see scale within a month of a descale, you are in a hard water area and should be doing this monthly.

Prevention
Scale precipitates out of the water that sits in the kettle after boiling and evaporates. So the single most effective habit is also the simplest: empty the kettle after each use. Boiling only what you need helps for the same reason and saves energy in its own right.

A stainless steel mesh descaling ball left in the kettle gives scale a preferred surface to form on. It does not eliminate descaling, but it noticeably slows the build-up on the element, and it costs a couple of pounds.
What never to do
Never take anything abrasive to the element. Wire brushes, steel wool and scouring creams all scratch the protective surface, and a scratched element attracts scale faster than a smooth one — so the quick fix accelerates the problem permanently.
And never immerse the electrical base of a cordless kettle. Descale inside the jug only.
Is scale in your water harmful?
No. The white flakes are calcium carbonate — the same mineral in a calcium supplement — and drinking them is harmless. It is unpleasant in a cup of tea and it signals a kettle working harder than it needs to, which are both good reasons to deal with it, but it is not a health issue.
The short version
- 50:50 white vinegar and water, boil, leave an hour, rinse three times.
- Or 1-2 tablespoons of citric acid in a boiled kettle for twenty minutes.
- Monthly in hard water, two or three times a year in soft.
- Empty the kettle after every use — the best prevention there is.
- Never scour the element. Scratches make scale worse.
- The white flakes are harmless, just unpleasant.
The same acid-and-soak logic applies to a coffee machine and, in a different form, to cleaning a coffee grinder — though there the residue is oil, not mineral.
